Accumulation

Instrumentation: String Orchestra

Duration: 1'30"

Program Notes:

"Accumulation" was written for a reading by the University of Louisville String Orchestra in the Spring of 2021. As part of my compositional exploration in graduate school, I wanted to create something that escaped the realm of traditional string music while also not requiring months of rehearsal time on the parts of the performers. Out of this challenge came the idea of producing a sound mass piece using independent aleatory for each instrument. By giving the performers control over their pitch collection, rhythm, and even tempo, the texture can be fresh each time it is performed while still producing a similar effect each time. The texture weaves in and out of conducted vs. non-conducted material. Performers will play together as a section during any conducted sections, while the non-conducted material should be played independently by each player

Completed: March 2021
