Hidden Constants

Instrumentation: 2 euphoniums, 2 tubas

Duration: 7'

Video from March 4, 2020

Performers: Nic Englin, Nate Jones, Donovan Klutho, Aidan Shorey

Program Notes:

Hidden Constants is a passacaglia, building around a repeated bass line presented in the beginning by the 2nd tuba.  As the name implies, this bass line is a constant throughout the piece, though it is hidden and developed using retrograde and rhythmic/tempo alterations.  This piece was commissioned by Dr. Jesse Orth and UNITUBA for their performance in the 2019 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference, and is dedicated to my family.  Throughout the last four years, it seems nearly everything has changed.  Despite the tumultuous emotions I experienced during my college career and the various paths I have explored, my family has been the one constant, always providing me with support and love, even when I forget to look for it.
